£30,948 a year in new business & rank 1 on Google for London’s toughest bookkeeping terms.

In ten months, we took a London bookkeeping firm from zero organic leads to number one on Google for the city’s hardest bookkeeping terms.

That won them 14 enquiries, 6 new clients and £30,948 a year in recurring fees, all from one SEO retainer.

Client Overview

About Cain & Co

  • Industry: Bookkeeping & Financial Services
  • Services: SEO, Website Design & Development
  • Date: September 2025 – June 2026
  • Client: Cain & Co
  • Target Location: London
  • Website: bookkeepersuk.com

Interview with Paul on the 26th June, 2026.

The starting point: 2 years of SEO, 0 enquiries.

  1. Two years of SEO and zero enquiries: The firm had paid an SEO provider for two years and the website had never produced a single enquiry.
  2. Poor search rankings (August 2025):
    • Bookkeeping London: Position 20
    • Bookkeepers London: Position 8
    • Bookkeeper London: Not in the top 100
    • Bookkeeping services in London: Position 64
    • Bookkeeping for consultants: Not in the top 100
  3. A homepage that could not convert: Stock images on a broken layout. Microsoft Clarity showed visitors clicking through and leaving with no clear reason to get in touch.
  4. The wrong keywords: The old campaign chased low-value informational traffic instead of the commercial terms a London business owner types when they are ready to hire.
  5. Weak authority: 12 referring domains and a domain trust score of 11, well short of what a finance site needs to hold page one in London.
  6. Technical foundations left unaddressed: Missing schema, redirect chains and crawl errors sitting underneath the site.

The results at a glance.

  • £30,948 a year in new recurring fees: £2,579 a month from clients signed through organic search.
  • 6 new clients signed, all from organic SEO: A 55% lead-to-client conversion rate.
  • 11 qualified leads from the website: Worth around £52,000 a year in fees if every one converts.
  • #1 on Google for the core London terms:
    • Bookkeeping London (590 searches per month) – position 20 to #1
    • Bookkeepers London (590 searches per month) – position 8 to #1
    • Bookkeeper London (590 searches per month) – unranked to #2
    • Bookkeeping services in London (450 searches per month) – position 64 to #2
  • 6.7x more organic visitors: 73 to 487 organic sessions across matched ten-month windows.
  • 97% of organic clicks from commercial search terms: Business owners looking for a bookkeeper, not people already searching the firm by name.
  • Domain trust more than doubled: 11 to 24, with backlinks up from 144 to 459 and referring domains from 12 to 139.

The Website Solution

What we did: One plan, aimed squarely at London and the terms that win clients.

Bookkeeping is a Your Money or Your Life sector. Google will not rank a finance site without strong E-E-A-T, and its core updates reward topical authority and commercial relevance.

So we pointed every part of the work at one outcome: rank for the commercial London searches a business owner actually types, then give them a site that makes getting in touch effortless.

That meant commercial only. No informational keywords. We went after the bottom-of-funnel terms people search when they are ready to enquire, then built for the buyer behind them.

Paul’s average client turns over £1.2m, so we aimed at London, where the average business turns over around £1.7m. High-intent searches, high-value clients.

A site built around Paul, not stock photography.

  • Rebuilt the homepage around Paul as a credible London bookkeeper, in place of stock imagery.
  • Real personal branding and photography throughout.
  • Enquiry forms, click-to-call and clear calls to action on every section.
  • Transparent pricing, the referral offer and the Curry & Co networking nights.
  • Case studies, reviews and accreditation logos to carry the E-E-A-T signals finance rewards.

Every page pointed at the term it needed to win.

  • Meta titles rewritten around bookkeeping and bookkeepers London.
  • H1s aligned to the primary commercial term on every page.
  • Meta descriptions refreshed to lift click-through from search.
  • Homepage and service copy re-optimised around the keywords and the buyer’s pain points.

‘Bookkeeping London’ moved position 20 to 1 in 60 days, putting Paul in front of ready-to-enquire owners.

Foundations solid enough to survive a full migration.

  • Schema markup added and validated across key pages.
  • Sitemap, robots and 301 redirects cleaned up.
  • Redirect chains removed and crawl errors resolved.
  • A full site migration handled without losing rankings, carrying over URLs, H1s, meta and schema so position one held.

A page for every way an owner searches for a bookkeeper.

  • London location and client-coverage pages.
  • A bookkeeping for consultants page, now ranked first.
  • Sector pages for restaurants and law firms.
  • Kent, Brighton and Faversham location pages.

The results followed:

Links and citations built the slow way, so they hold.

  • Paid do-follow guest posts on relevant blogs for stronger links.
  • Free directory listings adding consistent, trusted citations with accurate NAP data.
  • A natural anchor mix across both, led by the target anchor, bookkeepers in London, balanced against brand anchors like Cain & Co and the domain name.
  • Total backlinks: 144 to 459. Referring domains: 12 to 139. Domain trust: 11 to 24.

The rankings: Every target keyword moved onto page one.

Within 60 days the firm ranked first for “bookkeeping London”.

By June, every core commercial term sat in the top two.

What this meant for Cain & Co

  • 6 new clients signed, worth £30,948 a year:

£2,579 a month in recurring fees, from 11 qualified leads. A 55% lead-to-client conversion rate, which means the traffic is bringing high-intent buyers rather than tyre-kickers. Around £52,000 more a year sits in the pipeline if every qualified lead converts.

  • 14 enquiries from organic search:

5 contact form enquiries, 7 phone call clicks and 2 email clicks. Almost all landed on the rebuilt homepage, which alone took 74.95% of the site’s organic clicks.

  • 6.7x more organic visitors:

73 organic sessions before, 487 with HandL Agency, across matched ten-month windows. A 567% rise.

  • The clicks are commercial, not brand:

97% of clicks came from commercial search terms and only 3% from brand searches. Fewer than 1 in 20 clicks come from people already searching the firm by name. The rest are business owners looking for a bookkeeper who had never heard of Cain & Co before Google put them on page one.

  • Explosive keyword growth:

Total keywords ranking climbed from 292 to 421, and keywords in the top five went from 38 to 125. Top-five visibility more than tripled, and the 38 terms ranking before were mostly the firm’s own brand name.

  • Search visibility:

The site appeared in Google over 230,000 times across the period, rising from 12.4k monthly impressions in November to a peak of 37.6k in March.
